The aim of the SA Nano-Micro Manufacturing Association (SANMMA) is to unlock opportunities for networking and building a platform for nano-micro manufacturing technologies in South Africa. It promotes the activities and cause of its members and lobbies funding agencies towards establishing a sustainable programme in which well funded research projects will use the Nano-Micro Manufacturing Facility (NMMF) established by the South African Department of Science and Innovation.
The NMMF which will be established at a number of sites across South Africa, and will stimulate activities in nano-micro device manufacture and assist academic as well as industrial researchers to increase the technology and manufacturing readiness levels of their technology or product. In this context, we consider nano-micro manufacturing to include printed and flexible electronics, advanced sensors, diagnostic devices as well as certain advanced components. The technology concerns the use of sophisticated equipment to produce and integrate nanomaterials such as functional nanoparticles and nanotubes, atomic layers, graphene sheets, micro-fluidics, bio-markers and micro-electro mechanical systems, in processes such as printing, embossing, lithography, layer deposition and fabrication.
Dr Manfred Scriba, as part of the NMMF establishment, attended the IDTechEx2019 conference and fair which started on 9 April 2019 and ended on 12 April 2019.
